What makes a good computer processor?

The best processors are ones with lots of cores, lots of threads and a high clock speed. If you are looking for sheer number-crunching performance, you will need a server chip. However, for gaming, an optimized desktop chip is more suited to graphics rendering. Some chips will have integrated graphics, and some won’t which means a graphics card will be required. Those with integrated graphics are likely to be slower as they have more tasks to do. The best processors are those with lots of cores. Cores generally come in multiples of two and you will see that some may have 2 cores, 4 threads or 8 cores, 16 threads. This is called multi-threading. One thread is one line of execution so multi-threading is the way to go in this modern day and age. A chip needs a high clock speed. A higher clock speed means it will cycle through more tasks every second. A chip of 1Hz will do one instruction a second. 1GHz is the same as 1,000,000,000 Hz.
